‘THE SHIKARA IN SRINAGAR’

(Part – 3 : Srinagar)

We were on our last day in Kashmir and we expected it to end on a high. Heading towards the capital city of Jammu and Kashmir, Srinagar on our Day 6, all we could do is look back to a beautiful week and hope if it could go on forever. It was drizzling a little as we entered Srinagar. We had our stay at Welcomheritagehotels property of Gurkha Houseboats in Nagin Lake. Currently it’s the best houseboat property in the whole of Kashmir. On our way, we planned to enjoy the Dal Lake too.

Untitled design

Dal lake in Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, India, is integral to tourism and recreation in Kashmir and is named the “Lake of Flowers”, “Jewel in the crown of Kashmir” or “Srinagar’s Jewel”. The lake is also an important source for commercial operations in fishing and water plant harvesting. A lot of activities and operations within the lake helps some locals to make a living for themselves. On our 45 minute Shikara ride,we clicked loads of pictures  with the sun setting down as our backdrop and that feeling of inner peace is an experience that words cannot describe. Locals trying to make their ends meet, different species of birds flocking around, a market that displays the essence of Kashmir. As we ended our ride and stepped into the car to leave for our houseboat, the drizzles turned into heavy downpour of rain.Whilst driving by the Dal Lake when it’s raining cats and dogs, one realises the beauty of nature. Only if we we could stop everything around and just stare at this magnificent view.

We reached Nagin Lake, a 15 minute drive from Dal Lake. Fortunately, the rain stopped as we stepped out of the car to leave for our houseboat. We quickly took a shikara, kept our luggages and reached Gurkha Houseboats. Oh, what a beautiful artwork by the Welcomheritagehotels. The interiors, the carvings, the location and undoubtedly the hospitality; it just couldn’t get any better. We took another ‘Shikara Ride’, this time in the Nagin Lake and it was equally beautiful. It was a special day for all 4 of us. We got engaged exactly 1 year ago today and Krishna and Shreyans were celebrating their 2nd Year Anniversary.

We came back from the ride, sat on the porch of the boat and talked for a few hours without realising the time. What we were witnessing was a sun, drowning itself in the blue waters, the horizons of the sky and the water, mixing without a division for as far as we see with our naked eyes. The sky turning orangish yellow from blue, and then black, as we sat and gazed outside. It was dinner time. We had arranged a special dinner for ourselves to celebrate the occasion and the team at Gurkha Houseboats left no stoned unturned to make sure we made the most of the special occasion and also celebrating our last dinner in Kashmir. The decor, candles, lightings, specially curated menu and cuisines, just like we wanted. A perfect end to a perfect trip. It just couldn’t get any better. We played games and then slept peacefully that night, a little part of us, wanting to stay back, but knowing we had a morning flight back to Surat.

Though we left for Surat the next morning, a part of us, will always, always be in Kashmir.

Truly and rightly called, ‘The Heaven on Earth’.

‘CAHAL-PAHAL AT PAHALGAM’

(Part – 2 : Pahalgam)

Day 4 began with us leaving for Pahalgam, almost a 5-6 hour drive from Gulmarg, if you stop for Lunch, like we did. With eye-pleasing scenic beauty and beautiful weather, you reach Pahalgam by crossing the famous Apple Valley. We stopped alongside river Lidder on our way. Nearly 5 minutes away from our hotel, Pine and Peak, Rive Lidder is another magnificent location in this beautiful state of Kashmir. The clean water and rock by the roadside bring about a beautiful picturesque scenery.

We reached our hotel and were warmly welcomed by the team of Welcomhotel Pine and Peak. Snuggled between pine trees and paths that lead to the shimmering Lidder River, Welcomhotel Pine n Peak is perched atop of the stunning Rajwas Plateau. The only luxury retreat in Pahalgam, Pine n Peak’s exquisite design derives inspiration from local, traditional art, including wood carving and intricate tapestry. The hotel opens up to picturesque views of snow-capped mountains and the Valley of Shepherds. Known for their hospitality, the locals tell us, this is where Salman Khan stays when he comes to Pahalgam for shooting. We took the day off to enjoy the hotel, it’s scenic beauty and the places around it. The dinner consisted of a dish called the ‘Shaahi Tukda’ that literally became our ‘Jigar Ka Tudka’

Untitled-design-_4_

The next morning, we took up the famous mode of transport in the city, Pony Ride; to visit a few tourists spots in the city. An adventurous ride admits the forests took us to our first spot, ‘Baisaran Valley’. Baisaran Valley, located just 5 kilometers away from Pahalgam in the Anantnag district of Kashmir, is famous as a top sightseeing destination, called mini-Switzerland because of its picturesque beauty. It’s a hilltop green meadow dotted with dense pine forests and surrounded by snowcapped mountains. This famous offbeat tourist place in Jammu and Kashmir is great for those wanting to spend a quiet time in the company of nature. Next stop was ‘Dabyan’. Dabyan Valley with snow capped peaks, is a vast meadows situated on top of the mountain range overlooking the Lidder River flowing through the Pahalgam and Lidder Valley. While on the way, we also stumbled upon ‘Kangmarg’, ‘The Kashmir Valley’ and ‘The Pahalgam Valley’. Due to the COVID-19 norms, we couldn’t visit ‘The Tulyan Lake’, but for those who visit Pahalgam, it is a must visit. It lies at an altitude of 3,684 metres above sea level, 16 kilometres southwest from Pahalgam. The lake often has chunks of ice floating in it.

Untitled_design_1_

After spending a few hours on some of the most magnificent horses, we came back to our hotel for a quick bite as we had to leave for Aaru Valley, Chandanwari and Beetab Valley. Having seen most of Gulmarg and Pahalgam, Aaru Valley seemed a bit of a led down as it had to offer. A few shopping elements of Kashmiri touch and we were on our way to Chandwari. A lot of people asked us to  skip Chandanwari, however, since we were here, we thought to cover all the places that we could and Thank God that we did. Chandanwari turned out to  be the most beautiful place in Pahalgam. Highly underrated, Chandanwari is famous for being the base, or starting point, to the famous Hindu Pilgrimage site, Shri Amamath Yatra. It is  blessed with picturesque beauty, with  the Lidder River flowing closeby, and is famous for its sightseeing opportunities, as it is surrounded by snowcapped mountains. One can watch the lovely sight of glaciers melting in the Lidder River here. Tip point- Make sure you are loaded with winter clothes as it’s going to be cold there, pro-tip carry altitude medicine or simply Camphor (Kapoor) to improve low oxygen levels. You can also take any chocolate for low blood pressure emergency due to cold weather. Nothing to worry about just a few tips to stay extra healthy. It was almost getting dark and we still had Beetab Valley to complete. Though we wanted to spend some time at Chandanwari, we had to leave as some places were being shut down a little early due to government guidelines in respect to COVID-19. Next up, we quickly reached Beetab Valley. Beetab Valley is situated in Anantnag district in Jammu and Kashmir. The valley got its name from the Sunny Deol-Amrita Singh hit debut film ‘Beetab’. After a day full of rides and travel, we came back to hotel and prepared for our checkout on the next day.

‘MANN DOLA IN GANDOLA’

(Part – 1 : Gulmarg)

It was finally happening! Kashmir was now a dream we would be living shortly.
We arrived at Srinagar and directly departed for Gulmarg on our very first day. The 3 hour journey was filled with scenic beauty and the most renowned Khyber Resorts was waiting for us. After a 15 hour journey from Surat to Gulmarg, we were finally ready for all the adventures along with our favourite couple Shreyans and Krishna.

We were enchanted by the Heaven in Heaven. Located at just 5 minutes from Gondola,The Khyber Resorts is one of the best luxury resort in Gulmarg, Srinagar.8,825 feet above sea level in the Pir Panjal range of the Himalayas, stands a world-class resort that captures the beauty of its pristine setting. With majestic views of the Affarwat Peaks, The Khyber Himalayan Resort & Spa is spread over 7 acres of a sylvan coniferous forest.

2

We were welcomed with the refreshing Kashmiri Kahwa which is a must have if you are in Kashmir. The corner popularly called, Kash in Kashmir at Khyber has a great hospitality team and made sure that they served us even at 2:00 AM in the night with warm coffee whilst we were freezing at 8 degrees. We enjoyed the hotel on the first day and post the dinner we sat out amongst the woods listening to songs and enjoying the cold.

Day 2 saw an early morning. As we had our breakfast with a view of the partly snow covered mountains and brisk rain, we were preparing to leave for the world famous Gandola Ride. Though we were unfortunate as Phase 2 was closed due to COVID norms, however, the Phase 1 experience was something worth remembering. Gulmarg Gondola, an administered union territory of India is a high altitude cable car. The two-stage gondola lift ferries about 600 people per hour to and from Kongdoori Mountain, a shoulder of nearby Apharwat Peak(13,780 ft).

Instructions- Take horse to Gandola skiing and sledging place. Book the skiing, sledging and horse together at the start point to have a hassle free experience. Note that Kashmir has Tip system apart from the fees to be charged which you would happily be paying seeing the amount of efforts the people do and the amount of humbleness they have. It is truly heaven not just for the natural beauty it has but also for the kind of people who live there. Extremely sweet and helping nature wouldn’t suffice the qualities they actually poses.

A boy sitting on a white horse and a girl sitting on brown horse

After an adventurous day at the top of Gulmarg Valley, we went back to the hotel, walked around in the city and prepared ourselves for Day 3. Having seen the morning view, there was no chance we were going to miss it on the third day. Having followed our morning ritual, we left for the bottom of Gulmarg Valley visit via ATV. On our way towards exploring the lower Gulmarg on ATV, we stopped by a beautiful valley of grassland and had the most amazing experience. Amidst the sunshine and cold breeze, the natural array of mountains and valleys felt exquisite. And the ATV ride should be your bucket list item for Gulmarg, Kashmir. Though a little expensive, it totally worth it. The cold breeze brushing against your skin, driving amidst the farms, village, lands, seeing the army positioned at multiple places and much more. Having a tour around the city for over 2-3 hours, seeing the River fronts, Waterfalls, Greenery and much more, we realised why Kashmir is called the Heaven on Earth and why Gulmarg is called the Heaven in Heaven.

We came back to the hotel by the evening and planned our way to Pahalgam on the next morning.

4

Oh, and did we forget to mention we had the world famous Maggie of Kashmir at every spot we stopped, from ‘Humari Barf waali Maggie’ to ‘Riverview Waali Maggie’!
